Royal Art of Benin—Preserved & Shared

Welcome to the Potgieter Collection of Benin Bronzes, a curated assemblage of royal artworks from the historic Kingdom of Benin. We let art speak for itself – an elegant, uncluttered presentation. Each bronze in this collection carries the weight of history, having been crafted by skilled guild artisans for the Oba’s court in Benin City. From the 16th century onward, bronze casters in the Edo kingdom created decorated plaques, regal figures, and sacred royal regalia that recorded dynastic achievements and cultural heritage. These masterpieces are not merely art objects; they are pieces of history, imbued with the legacy of a vibrant West African empire.

This website reflects our philosophy of art stewardship – we focus on honoring the artwork and its story. The result is a gallery-like digital space that is inviting, ideal for global collectors and researchers alike.

Our Commitment at a Glance: The Potgieter Collection is built on principles of ethics, respect, and transparency. Here are our core values:

  • Ethical Sourcing: Every artifact in our collection has been acquired through legal and transparent means. We strictly adhere to international guidelines for cultural heritage stewardship, ensuring that our acquisitions respect both the letter and spirit of the law.
  • Cultural Respect & Stewardship: We regard ourselves as caretakers of these bronzes, not merely owners. The collection is managed with the utmost respect for the Edo culture and the descendants of its creators. We maintained close relationships with the Benin and Ife royal circles, honoring any conditions tied to the artworks. For example, we honored a moratorium on public display or sale for several years as per agreements with the original owners. Our long-term vision is to eventually see these pieces accessible to the public.
  • Charitable Reinvestment: A defining feature of our ethos is that proceeds and efforts are reinvested into the communities that nurtured this art. The Potgieter Collection was built with a promise – funds used to acquire these bronzes have directly benefited women, children, and underserved communities in West Africa. The Potgieter family and Dr. Stephen Thanni have funded projects such as building orphanages, schools, and water wells, and empowering women entrepreneurs. One notable example is the sale of a bronze heirloom whose proceeds helped build an infant school in Ghana, now thriving with over 200 students. By linking art to development, we ensure that the heritage showcased here continues to give back to its place of origin.
  • Transparency & Documentation: Full transparency about each piece’s journey. Records, including original ownership and expert assessments of age (often 300–500 years old), are available for review. Scientifically analyse are ongoing to confirm their period and authenticity. We aim to share these documents when availible with interested parties as appropiate. In addition, via Dr. Thanni we have collaborated with historians and curators to refine the understanding of each piece to date. This commitment to openness assures potential custodians that each bronze’s history is well-understood and honestly represented.

Our Collection

“For centuries, the bronzes of Benin have stood as enduring symbols of a great African civilization. Created for the royal palaces of the Obas, these works include palace plaques, altar heads, ceremonial vessels, and zoomorphic figures. Not only do they showcase exquisite craftsmanship through the lost-wax casting technique, they also serve as an invaluable historic record of the Kingdom of Benin’s dynasties, rituals, and global connections. Each artifact in our collection is a storyteller – conveying episodes of court life, reverence for ancestral Obas, or the kingdom’s early encounters with European traders.
